Technicolor to Create Film Lab in Quebec
Carlton Communications’ Technicolor, the largest processor of motion picture films, said it plans to spend $29.3 million to create the world’s biggest film lab in Mirabel, Quebec.
The 125,000-square-foot building will be used to duplicate master copies of films for distribution to movie theaters. Customers of Camarillo-based Technicolor include Walt Disney Co., New Line Cinema Corp. and DreamWorks SKG.
Master copies of films are produced at Technicolor’s Covitec laboratory, also in Quebec.
Technicolor chose the Quebec location because it is close to its Covitec lab, said Walter Schonfeld of the company’s Worldwide Film Group. The company expects it will have about 1,000 employees in Quebec by the time the lab is completed. It has a total of about 8,000 workers.
Technicolor is being sold to Thomson Multimedia of France. The transaction is expected to close soon, Technicolor said.
