Records Fall at Irvine Invitational

Five county athletes and the Santa Margarita boys’ 1,600-meter relay team set meet records Saturday at the Irvine Invitational track and field meet at Irvine High.

Mario Bassani of Irvine had the most impressive time at the 22nd annual meet, winning the 400 meters in 48.66 seconds, the fastest time by a county runner since Garden Grove’s Kevin Griswold went 48.09 in 1996.

Corona del Mar senior Josh Yelsey won the 1,600 in a meet-record 4 minutes 20.77 seconds.

Tustin’s Alonso Smith won the 800 in 1:54.92 and finished second in the 1,600 (4:24.78) to help the Tillers win the team competition with 71 points.

Amber Steen of Newport Harbor won the girls’ 1,600 in a meet-record 4:55.25, Corona del Mar’s Julie Allen won the 3,200 in a meet-record 10:49.96 and Elisa Liana of Katella set a meet record in the pole vault by one inch, jumping 10-1.

Michelle Sanford of Woodbridge won the 100 in 13.05 and the 200 in 26.48, helping the Warriors win the team competition with 79 points.

In the Brea Rotary Relays:

Esperanza wins--The Aztecs won the girls’ title with 104 points. Esperanza won the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays, as well as the team competition in the triple jump, shotput and discus.

Esperanza’s Annie Briggs won the 100 in 12.66.

In the San Diego Tournament of Champions boys’ volleyball event at Francis Parker High:

Fountain Valley wins--Nate Hagstrom was named MVP and Russell Holmes and Joe Volz earned all-tournament honors for the Barons, who defeated Capistrano Valley in the final, 15-13, 15-8.

Fountain Valley defeated Simi Valley Royal, 15-3, 10-15, 15-9, in one semifinal and Capistrano Valley defeated Santa Margarita, 15-3, 15-4, in the other. Santa Margarita is ranked No. 1 in Orange County.

Mater Dei defeated Newport Harbor in the fifth-place match, 15-11, 15-17, 15-8.
