Tommy Maddox passed for 240 yards and three touchdowns and Saladin McCullough rushed for 124 yards and scored twice Sunday as the Xtreme defeated the Birmingham Thunderbolts, 35-26, before 11,197 at Birmingham, Ala.

The victory gave the Xtreme (4-2) sole possession of first place in the XFL West Division.

There were five lead changes before the Xtreme took the lead for good on Jose Cortez’s 19-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The kick was set up by an interception by Errick Herrin.

The Xtreme added to its lead with 1:45 left on Maddox’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Jeremaine Copeland.

Birmingham (3-3) quarterback Casey Weldon passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game at the end of the third quarter because of a wrist injury.

Jay Barker--a hometown favorite who quarterbacked the Alabama Crimson Tide to a national championship in 1992--completed only two of five passes with two interceptions in place of Weldon.

New York/New Jersey 20, San Francisco 12--Joe Aska’s two-yard touchdown run with 5:40 left helped the Hitmen win before 33,522 at San Francisco.

Aska added a conversion run for the Hitmen (2-4), who recorded four sacks on Demon quarterback Pat Barnes.

The Demons (3-3) closed to 14-12 with 11:24 remaining on Barnes’ eight-yard touchdown pass to Travis Moore, capping a 71-yard drive after the Hitmen’s Leo Araguz missed a 37-yard field goal.
