POSITION BY POSITION

* FORWARD: Parris of Northridge is 6-5 but plays taller than he is. He also gets into foul trouble. He ranks fifth in the nation in disqualifications with 10. Last season, he led the nation with 13. Gooden, a projected top-10 NBA draft pick, sat out five games because of a wrist injury but has played in the last three. Power forward Collison is shooting 58% from the field and is one of the most fundamentally sound big men in the nation.

* CENTER: Heinle, a 6-9 senior, was a runaway choice for Big Sky most valuable player, leading the conference in scoring and rebounding. He plays well with his back to the basket and is a good three-point shooter. Chenowith is 7-1 but draws criticism for not being aggressive. Coach Williams described him as the most criticized player he has had at Kansas.

* GUARD: Both offenses rely heavily on the point guard. The Matadors’ is driven by Carr, who ranks among the nation’s assist leaders. He is poised and an excellent ballhandler. Same goes for Hinrich, who plays close to 40 minutes a game and led the Big 12 in assists and three-point percentage. Like Carr, he has good court vision. Shooting guards Holmes of Northridge and Boschee of Kansas are three-point threats.

* COACHING: Braswell is 85-62 in five seasons at Northridge, his first Division I head-coaching job. His ability to extract the most from players makes him a coveted candidate for other jobs. Williams, the NCAA’s winningest coach in the 1990s, is 353-88 in 13 years.

* THE PICK: Kansas, of course. The Jayhawks rank fifth all-time in tournament victories. It has been an impressive season for lowly Northridge, highlighted by a victory over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. But the Matadors can’t keep playing David against the NCAA’s Goliaths, can they?
