Pacifica Hires Camarillo Assistant

Pacifica High in Oxnard, opening in September, has selected Camarillo assistant Richard Jaquez as baseball coach.

Jaquez has been an assistant at Camarillo for seven years, helping the Scorpions win three league championships.

Pacifica will have freshmen and sophomores in its first year, playing a junior varsity schedule until joining the Pacific View League in 2003.

BASKETBALL

* Kelly Greathouse and Courtney Young of Buena have been selected co-players of the year by the Ventura County Basketball Coaches’ Assn.

First-team choices include Courtney LaVere of Buena, Teresa Cooper of Simi Valley, Gillian Lillich of Camarillo, Jennifer Lacy of Agoura, Katy O’Brien of Ventura, Rachel Hever of Newbury Park, Sarah Ruiz of Santa Paula, Novey Woodard-Parker of Royal, Natalia Worth of Moorpark and Michelle Bregar of Oak Park.

* Cody Pearson of Notre Dame and Andrew Moore of Crespi have been selected Mission League co-players of the year.

First-team choices include Scott Borchart of Chaminade, Omar Wilkes of Loyola, Michael Jenkins of St. Francis, Michael Luderer of Notre Dame, Kingsley Anyanwu of Crespi, Craig Weinstein of Harvard-Westlake and Evan Cline of Alemany.

* Rachel Hever of Newbury Park, Teresa Cooper of Simi Valley and Jennifer Lacy of Agoura have been selected tri-players of the year in the Marmonte League.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Chris Morgan of Taft High won the boys’ 60-meter high hurdles Sunday in the National Scholastic Indoor championships at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

Morgan, defending state champion in the 110 high hurdles outdoors, clocked a career-best 7.83 in the final after running 8.01 to win his qualifying heat.

Morgan was eliminated in a first-round qualifying heat of the 60-meter dash on Saturday.

* Seniors Jason Lovell of Cleveland High and Chris Wells-Anders of El Camino Real placed sixth in the 400 and 800, respectively, in the Nike Indoor Classic at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Center in Landover, Md., on Sunday.

Lovell, fifth in the 400 in the state championships last year, timed 50.76 in the final after running 49.38 to win his qualifying heat on Saturday.

Wells-Anders, runner-up in the 800 in the state meet, ran 1:56.22.

TENNIS

* Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated No. 3-seeded Oscar Posada of Venezuela, 7-5, 6-4, in the first round of boys’ 18 division play Monday at the 31st annual Banana Bowl in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

SOFTBALL

* George Baca has resigned as coach at Cornerstone Christian High and will be replaced by interim coach Karen Breshears.
