Coogan Zeros In and Beats Kennedy With a No-Hitter, 3-0

Melissa Coogan of El Camino Real High said she was a little nervous before taking the circle against Kennedy on Tuesday in a nonleague game.

“Then when we got on the field, my worries went away,” Coogan said.

The Hawaii-bound senior right-hander dismissed the Golden Cougars almost as quickly, throwing a no-hitter and striking out seven in a 3-0 victory at El Camino Real.

Coogan, who retired 18 consecutive batters between fielding errors in the first and seventh innings, kept the ball down and worked the outside corner throughout.

“I thought we had a good chance coming in,” Kennedy Coach Barbara Rodrigue said. “But [we] just wouldn’t adjust to the outside pitch.”

Kennedy (3-1), arguably the second-best City team in the area, was the first City opponent for the Conquistadores (4-2), who are 3-2 against Southern Section teams.

Catie Goldblatt led off with a bunt for the first of three singles in a two-run first inning.

Lindsay Goldblatt, Catie’s twin, tripled to left with one out in the second and scored on Megan Zwoyer’s ground out.

“The good news is we came out strong,” Coach Lori Chandler of El Camino Real said. “The bad news is that’s all we did with the bats.”

Catie Goldblatt and Lily Landers each had two hits for the Conquistadores.
