KEYS TO THE GAME

* STYLE OF PLAY: Both teams employ similar offenses, with plenty of responsibility placed on the point guard. Northridge’s Markus Carr leads the nation in assists, averaging 8.9. Kansas’ Kansas’ Kirk Hinrich likewise has good court vision and averaged 7.1 assists to lead the Big 12. Both teams employ varying defenses.

* MATCHUP TO WATCH: Centers Eric Chenowith of Kansas and Brian Heinle of Northridge are from the West Coast and played against each other in summer league. Chenowith, a 7-foot-1 reserve, is counted on to rebound and block shots, while Heinle, 6-9, is the Matadors’ leading scorer and among their best three-point shooters.

* INTANGIBLES: Coach Bobby Braswell gets the most from players, the biggest reason for Northridge’s success. He has engineered upsets against UCLA, Fresno State and Oregon the last two seasons, all on the road.

* MAGIC NUMBERS: Northridge loves the three-point shot and nearly everyone shoots it. Heinle, and guards John Burrell, Marco McCain and Carl Holmes have combined for 174 of the team’s 204 three-pointers. Northridge is shooting 39.5% from three-point range. Hinrich has made 52 of 102 three-point shots (51%)--most among the Jayhawks, who are shooting 39.2% from behind the arc.

* FINAL ANALYSIS: Kansas, because of size and experience, is the pick, but don’t be too sure. Northridge has avoided being blown out, losing only one game--88-75 to Eastern Washington--by more than nine points.
