FIRST HALF
MARYLAND: 42
STANFORD: 32
*
What Happened: It was tit for tat through the first six minutes, although Terence Morris of Maryland picked up his second foul at the 16:43 mark and sat out most of the half. Center Jason Collins made two free throws to give Stanford a 12-10 lead with 14:21 to play. Maryland rallied with a 7-0 run, including a three-point basket by guard Steve Blake and a steal and a layup by guard Juan Dixon, for a 17-12 lead with 12:53 remaining. Stanford countered with a three-point basket by guard Michael McDonald, who was left all alone at the top of the circle, and a fastbreak layup by forward Casey Jacobsen, tying the score with 11 minutes to play. Stanford swingman Ryan Mendez, the country’s third-best free-throw shooter during the regular season at 94.1%, had a chance to put the Cardinal up by three points with 6:51 left but shocked the crowd by missing the second shot of a one-and-one. Maryland forward Terence Morris tied the score with a jumper and the Terrapins were off on an 11-1 run.
* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: The missed free throw by Mendez, who came into the game having made 92 of 97, was indicative of the way things went for the Cardinal.
* Winning Number: Maryland scored seven of the eight times it got the ball into the post.
* Wrong Number: 10. The number of times Stanford had the ball in the paint and failed to convert a layup or fumbled away a shooting opportunity.
* Leading Scorers: Maryland--Lonny Baxter 12. Stanford--Casey Jacobsen 7, Jarron Collins 7.
* Leading Rebounders: Maryland--Three with three. Stanford--Jacobsen 5.
SECOND HALF
MARYLAND: 87
STANFORD: 73
*
What Happened: Maryland out-muscled and out-finessed the Cardinal. Stanford had its last hurrah in the first two minutes, cutting the Terrapins’ lead to 42-39 after Jacobsen made a three-point shot. But the Cardinal didn’t get another point for three minutes and another field goal for more than five. Meanwhile, Maryland went on a 14-2 run for a commanding 56-41 lead with 14:30 left. Stanford never got closer than nine points after that.
*
What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Maryland Coach Gary Williams responded to Stanford’s opening run of the half with a timeout after Ryan Mendez scored on a fast break 1:21 into the half. Jacobsen would make a three-point shot, but then Baxter scored on a layup and added a free throw, and Dixon and Blake buried three-point shots. “We had fire for five minutes and then it was gone,” Jacobsen said. Byron Mouton and Danny Miller did a great job defending Jacobsen, who made four of 11 shots. Jacobsen, meanwhile, was saddled with defending Maryland guard Juan Dixon, who made seven of 10, including his NBA three-pointer at the 16:56 mark with Jacobsen’s hand in his face.
*
Winning Number: Maryland made 32 of 55 shots, including nine of 13 from three-point range.
*
Wrong Number: 2. The number of free throws made and missed by the nation’s leading free throw shooter, Stanford’s Mendez.
*
Leading Scorers: Maryland--Baxter 12, Dixon 10. Stanford--Mendez 13, Jacobsen 9.
*
Leading Rebounders: Maryland--Morris 7. Stanford--Jacobsen 4.
