THOUSAND OAKS — A man being sought on two felony warrants was arrested on suspicion of driving a stolen car Wednesday after leading police on a brief freeway chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph, authorities said.
The incident started about 12:30 p.m. when undercover sheriff’s deputies in an unmarked car said they spotted a stolen 1998 red Ford Mustang weaving in and out of traffic and tailgating on the Ventura Freeway near Lynn Road.
When they tried to stop the car, the driver sped off, leading them onto California 23 toward Moorpark, said California Highway Patrol Officer Dave Webb.
CHP patrol cars were awaiting the vehicle on the freeway near Janss Road. When the driver spotted them, he stopped the car, made a U-turn and drove the wrong way on the freeway and down an onramp, Webb said.
Another CHP patrol car at the bottom of the onramp rammed the Mustang and disabled it, he said.
Christopher Hulgun, 28, of Santa Maria, was arrested on suspicion of auto theft, evading arrest, driving on a suspended license and using a controlled substance.
Webb said Hulgun had been wanted on two felony warrants issued in Oregon and San Luis Obispo County, but details of those cases were unavailable. Hulgun’s bail was set at $60,000.
