Mexican Rock

El Vez, the Mexican Elvis impersonator, will perform Friday at Cal State Northridge. People magazine has dubbed him “Elvis with salsa.” Along with his band, the Memphis Mariachis, and his backup singers, the Lovely Elvettes, El Vez delivers a show that has been described as the Chicano experience told through the songs of Elvis. His shows feature such numbers as “Huaraches Azules” (Blue Suede Shoes) and “En el Barrio” (In the Ghetto).

Chamber Music

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra will perform Saturday night in Glendale. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson will be the featured soloist in the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor and the Haydn Piano Concerto in D. Susan Greenberg will be the soloist in Bruce Broughton’s Concerto for Piccolo and Chamber Orchestra. Bizet’s Symphony No. 1 in C will close the program.

Community Fair

The Fourth Annual Calabasas Arts & Crafts Festival is this weekend. The works of more than 130 artists and craftspeople will be on display, in addition to children’s activities, food and live music. In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Saturday’s musical menu will feature samba, salsa, Latin jazz and flamenco guitarist Victory Mori. Sunday’s musical focus will be on pop funk and rock.

Variety Fund-Raiser
