Coaches Box on CIF Council’s Agenda

The state federated council of the California Interscholastic Federation will meet today and Saturday at an Ontario hotel to vote on a number of items, including one that would institute a coaches box for basketball next season.

But what might be the hottest topic of the meeting, a proposal to curb transfers for athletic purposes, is only at the discussion stage.

The proposal, which would force school officials to certify that no one connected with their athletic departments or booster clubs made contact with prospective transfers regarding athletic teams, could face a vote in October, making it effective beginning in the 2002-03 school year.

* The Southern Section announced that Barber Park in Irvine will be the site of softball championship games for all divisions June 1-2. Previous title games were played at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

The Division V and VI baseball championships will be June 1 at Cal State Fullerton, Divisions I-IV June 2 at Dodger Stadium. Baseball playoffs begin May 15, softball May 16. Pairings will be announced May 14.

TRACK AND FIELD

Mario Bassani, an Irvine High sprinter and the Orange County leader in the 200 and 400 meters this season, has committed to run track at UCLA. Last season, Bassani was the Sea View League champion in both events and won the Southern Section Division II title in the 400.
