Jo-Jo Moore; Baseball Star Was in 3 World Series
Jo-Jo Moore, 92, a star outfielder in the 1930s who played in three World Series for the New York Giants, died April 1 in Bryan, Texas. Known as the “Gause Ghost” for his hometown and his slight frame, Moore was the left-handed leadoff hitter and left fielder for the Giants from 1930-41. He played on six All-Star teams, had an especially strong arm and compiled a career batting average of .298.
His best season was 1934, when he batted .331 and hit safely 23 straight days.
Moore was part of the Giants team that defeated the Washington Senators in five games in the 1933 World Series. In the other two World Series in which he was involved, the Giants lost to New York Yankees teams that featured Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio.
Joseph Gregg Moore was born in Gause, about 80 miles from Austin, Texas. He used his 1933 World Series money to buy a ranch there, where he worked after his playing days.
