Rickey Henderson extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a leadoff triple Tuesday night and the San Diego Padres got 11 more hits against Greg Maddux to defeat the Atlanta Braves, 7-1, at San Diego.

Kevin Jarvis and two relievers combined on a six-hitter for the Padres, who won their fifth in a row and eighth in nine games. The Padres, 1-8 against the Braves last year, pulled back to .500 (16-16) for the first time since April 15.

Henderson finished three for five, giving him 2,934 hits and moving him out of a tie with Jake Beckley and into sole possession of 29th place on the all-time list. He also scored twice and stole two bases.

Maddux (3-3) gave up four runs in six innings, struck out five and walked two. The 12 hits were the most he has given up since he allowed 13 to the New York Yankees in 5 2/3 innings of an 11-7 victory last June 3. The four-time Cy Young Award winner fell to 9-10 lifetime against the Padres.

Tony Gwynn had two singles and a stolen base in his return from the disabled list, and even Jarvis (2-3) got into the act against Maddux, driving in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth to make the score 4-0.

San Francisco 9, Montreal 1--Marvin Benard hit the first grand slam of his career and J.T. Snow hit two homers for the Giants at San Francisco.

Shawn Estes (3-2) gave up six hits in eight innings as the Giants used power from unlikely sources to win their second in a row over the Expos, who have lost their last six games.

Benard’s blast, only his second homer in a dismal season, capped a five-run fifth inning that began with the slumping Snow’s third homer of the season. Snow, who drove in three runs, added a ninth-inning solo shot for his 11th multihomer game.

Colorado 12, New York 4--Neifi Perez went four for five and matched his career high with four runs batted in at Denver to help the Rockies end a three-game losing streak.

Perez had two singles, doubled and tripled to raise his batting average to .395. He is 21 for 59 since coming off the disabled list April 24.

Desi Relaford hit two homers, the first multihomer game of his career, and Edgardo Alfonzo added a solo shot for the Mets, who had won five of seven.

St. Louis 8, Pittsburgh 2--Andy Benes dominated for six innings and J.D. Drew hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run first inning for the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Benes (2-2) gave up one run and two hits, lowering his earned-run average from 8.10 to 6.89. He raised his Busch Stadium record to 25-12 and didn’t give up a hit until Jason Kendall singled to lead off the fourth.

Philadelphia 3, Houston 2--Amaury Telemaco gave up three hits in seven innings and Jimmy Rollins hit a tiebreaking single for the Phillies at Houston.

Telemaco (4-0) struck out four and walked two, helping the Phillies extend their winning streak to four games.

Jose Mesa, Philadelphia’s third pitcher, got three outs for his ninth save in 10 chances, completing a four-hitter. Mesa struck out two.

Milwaukee 4, Chicago 1--Richie Sexson hit a two-run homer and rookie Ben Sheets outpitched Kerry Wood at Milwaukee for his third consecutive victory.

Sheets (3-2) gave up five hits and struck out four in seven innings. He was relieved by Chad Fox in the eighth after giving up a leadoff home run to Damon Buford, his second, that pulled the Cubs within 4-1.

Wood (1-3), who has struck out at least 10 batters in four of his seven games this season, fanned 12. He gave up four runs and two hits and walked three in seven innings.
