There Was No Gretzky, but It Was a Great One

Thank you, Kings, for 2 1/2 months of the most exciting hockey that we’ve had around here for many years. It was like a party that I didn’t want to end. Can’t wait until September.

I mean, this is Lakertown, Kareem Country, Shaqville. So why should we yell “Go, Kings, go”? I’ll tell you why. Because we’ve just seen one of the best Game 7s and hockey series in King history. I’m glad to be an L.A. Kings fan. The new hockey town.

Let’s do it again, Coach Murray. Go, Kings, go.

Thank you, Kings, for the great roller-coaster ride in the playoffs. Not only did you keep my heart pounding, with me on the edge of my seat, but thanks for saving me $35 in admission fees to Six Flags Magic Mountain as well.

For those who will say that the Kings blew it, boo! The Kings’ season was a success. The “McSorley Curse” was broken once and for all. Not only did we end our playoff losing streak, we basically swept the Red Wings. We came back from a 3-1 deficit to force a Game 7 against the league-leading Avalanche when everyone said the Kings wouldn’t even make the playoffs.

I’m sorry that our season is over, but I look forward to the next. Also, thank you, Dave Taylor, for all of your excellent work that improved our team, especially the acquisition of a true No. 1 goalie in Felix the Cat!

While the on-ice talent of the Kings (players and coaches) deserves many plaudits for transforming their team into a playoff-style unit for the past two months, the puck is now in the corner and the owners and management must adeptly decide how to get it into the net.

After reading and hearing for two months about how management will use the so-called “Blake money” to improve the team, it is now time to put up or shut up. When the owners and management make unrestricted free agent Joe Sakic an offer he cannot refuse, the Kings will demonstrate that they are intent on being an annual, legitimate, Stanley Cup contender.

Until I see this commitment to winning the Cup taken seriously, the only thing I believe the owners and management will have taken from this remarkable playoff run is ka-ching.

Anyone feel guilty about booing Rob Blake now?

Congratulations to the Kings on a good season and an exciting playoff run. They got an “A” for effort. They were simply outgunned, outmanned and outcoached by the Avalanche.

King fans, however, get a big fat “F” for their conduct, especially their bush league booing of Rob Blake each time he touched the puck in the games played in LaLa Land. Did you see any Avalanche fans booing Miller or Deadmarsh when they handled the puck? Of course not. Are the Kings’ fans so stupid as to believe the propaganda propounded by Kings’ management about Blake being a greedy spoiled superstar, after what he did for the franchise and the area for a decade?

C’mon, get real. The horrendous treatment of Blake and his wife in the stands made the Kings’ fans a laughingstock among the nation’s hockey fans, and further evidenced why the rest of the country refers to the region as “the land of fruits and nuts.”
