Peaches’ High-Energy Raunch Delivered With a Wink and a Nudge

In her black vinyl dress and hot pink fishnet stockings, Peaches would have seemed equally at home streetwalking on Santa Monica Boulevard as strutting around onstage at Spaceland on Friday. And it would have been just as appropriate for this libidinous singer, who has developed a small but rabid fan base with “Teaches of Peaches,” an album of unabashed sex advice doled out in a raw, stripped-down style that’s equal parts punk, rap and disco.

The Berlin-based Canadian delivered a string of catchy, raunchy songs that led the frenzied crowd into a sing-along and Studio 54-style dance party. Like a low-rent Madonna with a Billy Idol sneer and David Lee Roth swagger, the high-energy performer was like something from vintage “Saturday Night Live,” satirizing the very genres she has so successfully fused into her unique brand of campy, ‘80s-inspired dance music.

Chilly Gonzales, Peaches’ partner in rhyme, warmed up the crowd with a comedic rap act that was part performance art. After a couple of songs, he stripped from a safari outfit to a pink leisure suit and speed-rapped to a metronome.

The night probably should have ended when Peaches exited the stage, leaving the synthesizer on and the audience in a tizzy. As all good performers--and lovers--know, you should leave them wanting more. But like the sex addict she plays on stage, she returned for two more sets.
