This year’s two-day Doheny Blues Festival offers as strong a lineup as any, from such veterans as bandleader John Mayall and singer-guitarsit Taj Mahal to more recent arrivals including Keb’ Mo’, Shemekia Copeland and Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. Blues Traveler (with mile-a-minute harmonica man John Popper) is back in action and headlines Saturday’s bill, but if there’s a single don’t-miss act on the lengthy bill, it would have to be the venerable Blind Boys of Alabama, one of the great gospel groups ever, playing Sunday.

Though one of the world’s leading jazz artists, Bobby McFerrin recently has been concentrating on symphonic conducting, too. He also has held the creative chair at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra since 1994. In Orange County, he will conduct the Pacific Chorale in Faure’s Requiem, selected spirituals and various arrangements of his own music. He will also provide a taste of his captivating vocal improvisations.
