Re “UC Ends Affirmative Action Ban,”’ May 17: The UC regents’ cowardly decision to appease minority activists with a symbolic repeal of the affirmative action ban demonstrates their true contempt for minority students who, when admitted with lower qualifications than their fellow students, unsurprisingly fare less well. For all the anti-meritocratic hue and cry, the single best predictor of first-year college grade point average remains the much-maligned SAT.
