No Damage Reported in 6-Hour Series of Quakes
A six-hour swarm of earthquakes, the strongest magnitude 4.1 and 4.0, struck a sparsely populated area of the Eastern Sierra near Walker Pass on California 178 Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quakes, all about five miles under the Earth’s surface, were felt from the San Joaquin Valley cities of Bakersfield and Porterville east to Trona and north along U.S. 395 to Olancha, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.
USGS instruments recorded the first temblor at 12:49 p.m., measuring magnitude 3.0, and the subsequent quakes, centered 18 miles southwest of Coso. Walker Pass is about halfway between Lake Isabella and Ridgecrest.
