Rally Touts Bill to Improve School Routes
School officials, parents and politicians tried to rally support Friday in Cypress Park for a stalled bill that would provide funds for sidewalks, pedestrian bridges and other such facilities near schools statewide.
The Safe Routes to School bill, written by state Sen. Nell Soto (D-Pomona), would provide $20 million over the next three years. The bill is in an inactive file, and its supporters fear it will die.
According to Los Angeles Police Department statistics, eight people under age 17 were killed and about 750 suffered traffic-related injuries while walking in the city last year.
