Two Ventura County elementary schools have been designated Blue Ribbon Schools, one of public education’s top awards.
University Elementary in Thousand Oaks and Oak Hills Elementary in Oak Park are two of 43 California schools that will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., this fall.
The awards are given out by the U.S. Department of Education after an extensive application process, and elementary and secondary schools are recognized in alternating years.
This is the second Blue Ribbon award for Oak Hills, which was also recognized in 1992. Schools can apply for the award every five years. Oak Hills Principal Tony Knight said only about 200 schools in the nation have been selected as Blue Ribbon schools twice.
