The Huntington Beach City Council has allocated about $4 million in state funds for a project to improve storm water systems that clean urban runoff before it reaches the coast.

The funds, available through Proposition 13, will be used to develop a citywide water quality management plan to better track the levels and contents of storm water discharges and identify problem areas, officials said.

Under the plan approved May 21, the city will also upgrade urban runoff diversion systems and build underground treatment structures to collect trash and sediment at 12 downtown storm drain outlets.

“This demonstrates that water quality is a top priority in the city,” said Robert Beardsley, director of the Public Works Department.
