Three California Sites on ‘Clean Beaches’ List

Three California beaches were among more than 60 listed this month by the Clean Beaches Council as especially safe and environmentally sound in its third annual Blue Wave Campaign.

Local agencies pay $2,000 per beach per year to the private, nonprofit group (based in Fredericksburg, Va.) to fund the program, in which the beaches apply for certification based on water quality, habitat conservation, public education and other criteria, said Walter McLeod, the president. Beaches that are approved can post a Blue Wave flag. The program is modeled after similar campaigns in Europe.

This year’s list is twice as large as last year’s, McLeod said, with 29 beaches certified in Florida alone.

Three beaches at Point Reyes National Seashore near San Francisco--Drakes, Wildcat and Li-mantour--made the grade this year. Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, listed last year, did not reapply this year, McLeod said.
