Teen Hit by Cab; Driver Suspected of Using Drugs

A 14-year-old Oxnard boy suffered serious head injuries Saturday when he was struck by an on-duty cab driver driving under the influence of a controlled substance, police said Sunday.
Jose Palomares was being treated at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. Hospital officials said he was still there late Sunday but they refused to release his condition.
Gerald Carambelas, 49, an employee of City Cab Co. in Oxnard, was booked on suspicion of violating parole, driving under the influence of drugs and causing a crash with injuries. He was being held without bail.
Police said the teen was struck shortly before 6 p.m. at C and Eighth streets. The boy was in a marked crosswalk, police said.
