The Cashore Marionettes, Joseph Cashore’s remarkably fluid and expressive creations--Maestro Janos Zelinka, Old Mike, who digs through trash to the tune of Aaron Copland’s “Corral Nocturne”; a mother and baby, a horse named Cyclone and more--perform “Simple Gifts,” a series of funny and poignant vignettes set to classical music. Angela Lansbury, Carol Channing and Bernadette Peters head a star-studded tribute to Broadway icon Jerry Herman in “Tap Your Troubles Away: The Words & Music of Jerry Herman.” The S.T.A.G.E. too Production, a benefit for the Actors’ Fund of America, will also present Herman with its Hedda Harrigan Logan Award. The big star-studded cast, performing songs from such shows as “Mame,” “Hello, Dolly!” and “La Cage Aux Folles,” also includes Tyne Daly, Nancy Dussault, Jason Graae, Andrea Marcovicci, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Rita Moreno and many, many other stage veterans.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, while most comedians were keeping a low profile, Bill Maher was out there with his friends and enemies on the late-night ABC show “Politically Incorrect,” letting all his opinions hang out. His comments, which often provoke debate even in peacetime, drew the ire of White House officials in the days after the attack. British conductor Sir David Willcocks leads the Los Angeles Festival of Children’s Choirs--Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, Los Robles Children’s Choir, the Paulist Choristers and the South Bay Children’s Choir--in his own composition, “The Glories of Shakespeare,” at Pasadena Presbyterian Church. More than 200 young people will participate.
