Tar Heels Fall, 77-69, to Hampton

Tommy Adams scored 20 points as Hampton stunned No. 19 North Carolina, 77-69, in an opener Friday night at Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tar Heels missed 28 of 34 three-point tries as they struggled to score against the Pirates’ zone defense. Hampton played a zone on every defensive possession.

Jason Capel scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels.

No. 3 Illinois 76, Gonzaga 58--The Illini used its size advantage and pulled away from the Zags in an opener at Champaign, Ill. Brian Cook had 18 points and nine rebounds and Cory Bradford added 17 points for Illinois.

Dan Dickau had 19 points for Gonzaga (0-1).

No. 4 Kentucky 90, Marshall 73--Keith Bogans had 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists at Lexington, Ky., as the Wildcats (1-1) won a consolation game of the NABC Classic. Marshall is 0-2.

No. 6 Florida 68, Florida State 47--Udonis Haslem scored 18 points at Gainesville, Fla., as the Gators won their fourth in a row against the Seminoles.

It was a sloppy victory for the Gators, who committed 17 turnovers and made only 16 of 45 shots from the field in the final 30 minutes. Delvon Arrington led the Seminoles (0-1) with 11 points.

No. 10 Saint Joseph’s 74, Princeton 63--Na’im Crenshaw scored all 17 of his points in the second half as the Hawks (1-1) rebounded from a shocking defeat to Eastern Washington with a victory at Berkeley in a consolation game of the Black Coaches Assn. Classic.

No. 11 Virginia 105, Wagner 74--Roger Mason scored 24 points and added nine assists to lead the Cavaliers in their opener at Charlottesville, Va. Jermaine Hall led Wagner (0-1) with 18 points.

No. 14 Georgetown 108, Marymount 47--Michael Sweetney had 27 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Hoyas in their opener at Washington.

No. 18 Oklahoma State 69, Cincinnati 62--Steve Logan scored 31 points, including 25 in the second half, but no teammate scored more than 12 as the Cowboys (1-0) won a defensive struggle at Stillwater, Okla. The Bearcats (0-1) had only five field goals and 16 points at halftime and finished one of 13 from three-point range.
