Tennis Player Reitz Commits to Purdue

Corona del Mar High senior Brittany Reitz signed a letter of intent to attend Purdue on a tennis scholarship.

Reitz, No. 9 in Southern California and No. 59 nationally in the girls’ 18 division standings, according to the U.S. Tennis Assn., also considered Northwestern, Harvard, Princeton and Yale.

She won the Southern Section singles championship last season.

Newport Harbor senior Natalie Braverman signed a letter of intent to attend Pepperdine.

Braverman chose the Waves over Arizona, UCLA, William and Mary and San Diego.

She is No. 16 in Southern California in the girls’ 18 division.

Other signings:

* Sergio Santos, an infielder at Santa Ana Mater Dei and a member of the USA Junior National team, has signed with USC.

He batted .460 with 30 runs batted in and 25 stolen bases last season.

* Scott Moore, a Cypress shortstop who batted .406 with 10 home runs, has signed with Cal State Fullerton, and teammate Jason Filarey, an outfielder who batted .362 with nine homers and 31 RBIs , has signed with USC.

* Infielder Robert Marcial of Reseda Cleveland has signed with Nevada.

* Rylan Hanks, a pitcher at Riverside Poly who was 11-1 last season, has signed with UC Riverside.

Riverside also signed golfer Nick Wilkins from Loma Linda Academy.

* John Haywood, a 6-6 forward at La Puente Bishop Amat, has signed with Loyola Marymount. Haywood averaged 14 points and seven rebounds as a junior.

Haywood will join Wes Wardrop at Loyola Marymount. Wardrop, a 6-3 guard, attended Anaheim Loara High before transferring to Worcester Academy in Massachusetts.

* Softball pitcher Melissa Johnson of Oak Park has signed with North Carolina Greensboro.

* Lauren Lappin, who plays shortstop for Loara’s softball team, has accepted a scholarship to Stanford as a catcher, and Loara’s Amanda Bowman has signed to play volleyball with Idaho.
