Keith Van Horn was a college standout at Utah, and fans here remember his shooting range. That’s why they went silent when he stared down an open jumper and nailed it.

Van Horn had 17 points and made a 20-footer from the top of the key with 2.3 seconds remaining in overtime as the New Jersey Nets ended a 12-game losing streak to the Utah Jazz with a 90-89 victory Wednesday night.

The shots kept coming in the dressing room, too, with Karl Malone and New Jersey Coach Byron Scott exchanging barbs about their shoving match late in the first half that resulted in double technicals.

Malone stiff-armed Scott twice after each stepped in to break up a scuffle between Kenyon Martin and John Crotty. After the game, Scott said Malone “has no heart.”

“Malone don’t scare me.... He’s a man, just like I am. I don’t back down to anybody. He doesn’t, and he knows it. We played them a lot of times. I know what he’s all about,” Scott said.

Malone answered by mocking Scott’s job as a role player with the Lakers during the championship days of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and said Scott doesn’t deserve to be an NBA coach.
