More Training Urged for Oversized Vehicles

From Times Staff Reports

The crash of a Metrolink train and a big rig in Glendale last year prompted the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday to recommend more training and government guidelines for drivers of oversized vehicles, as well as their CHP escorts.

The agency found that the Jan. 28, 2000, crash might have been avoided if the truck driver and his CHP escorts had been better trained. The NTSB also cited driver fatigue as a factor in the crash.

The accident occurred when the tractor-trailer rig made a wrong turn on Grandview Avenue and got stuck on the Metrolink tracks near San Fernando Road.
