Purse: $3.5 million. Winner’s share: $630,000.

TV: ESPN (Today-Sunday, 1-3 p.m.).

Last year: David Toms won with a five-foot par putt on the first hole of a playoff with Canada’s Mike Weir.

Last week: Justin Leonard successfully defended his Texas Open title, beating J.J. Henry and Matt Kuchar by two strokes.

Notes: Tiger Woods is skipping the tournament. He has not played since tying for 23rd in the Canadian Open on Sept. 9. ... Toms won the PGA Championship in August for his sixth tour title. ... David Duval won the 1997 tournament for the first of his 13 PGA Tour titles. He successfully defended the championship in 1998. ... The Invensys Classic at Las Vegas is next week, followed by the National Car Rental Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

LPGA TOUR

Samsung World Championship

Where: Hiddenbrooke Golf Club (6,359 yards, par 72); Vallejo, Calif.

When: Today-Sunday.

Purse: $750,000. Winner’s share: $157,000.

TV: ESPN (Today-Friday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.) and Channel 7 (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Sunday, 1-3 p.m.).

Last year: Juli Inkster won the event for the third time in four years, tying the tournament record of 14 under.

Last week: Se Ri Pak won her fifth 2001 title, beating Lorie Kane by five strokes in the AFLAC Champions.

Notes: Annika Sorenstam, Pak and Karrie Webb top the 20-player field, the first time they’ve appeared in the same event since the Canadian Women’s Open in August. Sorenstam, the tournament winner in 1995 and 1996, leads the tour with six victories and $1,666,306. Pak, the 1999 winner, is second with $1,451,509. ... The next tour event is the Nine Bridges Classic in South Korea, Oct. 19-21.

Turtle Bay Championship

Where: Turtle Bay Resort, Palmer Course (6,590 yards, par 72); Kahuku, Hawaii.

When: Friday-Sunday.

Purse: $1.5 million. Winner’s share: $225,000.

TV: PAX (Friday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.) and CNBC (Saturday-Sunday, 3-5 p.m.).

Last year: Hale Irwin tied Lee Trevino for the senior victory record with 29, beating Joe Inman by four strokes at Kaanapali.

Last week: Tom Kite won the Gold Rush Classic, tying the tour record for relation to par of 22 under. Allen Doyle finished second, a stroke back.

Notes: Irwin has two victories this year to push his tour-record total to 31. ... The tournament moves to Turtle Bay on Oahu after 14 years at Kaanapali on Maui. ... New Zealand’s Bob Charles won the 1990, 1995 and 1996 tournaments. ... Fuzzy Zoeller will be 50 on Nov. 11. ... The Transamerica is next week in Napa, followed by the SBC Championship in San Antonio.
