A native of Athens, Greece, Leonidas Kavakos won the Sibelius Competition in Helsinki in 1985, after which the Sibelius family invited him to perform and record the original version of the Sibelius concerto, which had been deemed unplayable. Kavakos will make his Orange County recital debut playing works of Bach, Stravinsky, Ysa{ydiere}e, Ravel and Enescu. Peter Nagy, first prize winner of the 1979 Hungarian Radio Competition, will be the accompanist. The recital is sponsored by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.

The Pacific Symphony plays the first of its two “Beethoven at the Barclay” programs. The program will include the two Romances for Violin and Orchestra, with concertmaster Raymond Kobler as soloist; the First Symphony; the march and chorus from “The Ruins of Athens,” and the Choral Fantasy, with pianist Norman Krieger and the John Alexander Singers.

It’s a rock en espanol festival at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater with veteran El Tri, that perennial favorite of Grammy voters in the Latin rock category, headlining a bill that includes Angeles del Infierno, Victimas del Dr. Cerebro. Gates open for the Tri-Fest at 4 p.m.; the music starts at 6.
