Violent Crimes Down; Burglary, Theft Rates Up
Violent crimes were down in California’s most heavily populated areas during the first half of 2001, but property crimes were up and may go higher, Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer said Wednesday.
Violent crimes dropped 1.5%, according to preliminary figures from the 75 cities and counties with populations of at least 100,000.
But property crimes such as burglaries and auto thefts jumped 2.9%. Homicides were up 6.4%, robberies rose 2%, and motor vehicle thefts were up 7.8%. But rapes were down 8.2%, aggravated assaults dropped 2.8%, and burglaries were down 1.4%.
