Sharing the Road

The July 11 Good Carma column (“Drivers, Bicyclists Must Find Common Ground on Safety”) reported on cyclist Debra Goldsmith, whose death April 11 after being struck by a car prompted calls for more comprehensive “share the road” campaigns.

The driver was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. At a pretrial hearing set for Oct. 25, the city attorney’s office expects to offer a plea bargain, said spokesman Frank Mateljan. It calls for three years’ probation, 300 hours of community service, restitution of funeral expenses and other costs to Goldsmith’s family and a one-year revocation of the driver’s license, Mateljan said.
