Petersen Breaks Ice for Penguins

Rookie Toby Petersen scored three goals and the previously winless Pittsburgh Penguins won in Coach Rick Kehoe’s debut, defeating the Ottawa Senators, 5-2, Tuesday night at Pittsburgh.

Robert Lang had two goals as the Penguins scored four goals on nine shots in the second period--three set up by Mario Lemieux for his first points this season.

The Penguins’ 0-4 start tied their 1983-84 team for the worst in franchise history. Coach Ivan Hlinka was fired Sunday following a 4-1 loss at Buffalo.

Toronto 4, Edmonton 1--Shayne Corson and Jonas Hoglund scored short-handed goals at Edmonton to help the Maple Leafs end the Oilers’ five-game unbeaten streak.

Mikael Renberg and Darcy Tucker also scored for the Maple Leafs.

Detroit 4, Columbus 3--Sergei Fedorov had a goal and an assist, and the Red Wings held off a third-period rally by the Blue Jackets at Detroit.

Trailing, 4-1, with little more than eight minutes remaining, Columbus got goals from Tyler Wright and Deron Quint.

Luc Robitaille, Mathieu Dandenault and Brendan Shanahan scored for Detroit.

Colorado 2, Tampa Bay 1--Stephane Yelle and Joe Sakic scored goals at Denver and the Avalanche ended a two-game losing streak.

Patrick Roy made 19 saves for Colorado and Tampa Bay’s Nikolai Khabibulin turned away 23 shots.

Atlanta 3, Philadelphia 3--John LeClair scored two third-period goals to help the Flyers tie the Thrashers at Atlanta.

Tony Hrkac put Atlanta ahead, 3-2, with 7:35 remaining in the third.

Damian Rhodes stopped Philadelphia’s 20 shots in the first two periods.

Minnesota 3, San Jose 3--Gary Suter’s power-play goal with 2:32 left in regulation lifted the Sharks to a tie at St. Paul, Minn.

Dwayne Roloson had 23 saves for Minnesota.

Boston 1, Phoenix 1--Brian Rolston scored a short-handed goal for the Bruins in the first period and Paul Mara answered 49 seconds later at Phoenix.

Florida 2, Vancouver 2--Ed Jovanovski’s goal early in the third period tied the score for the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.

Pavel Bure and Kristian Huselius scored for Florida.

Nashville 3, Buffalo 3--Richard Smehlik scored with 5:34 remaining at Buffalo, N.Y., as the Sabres overcame a two-goal deficit.

Smehlik’s goal came 1:32 after Slava Kozlov’s power-play goal cut the Predators lead to 3-2.

Calgary center Marc Savard will be out of the Flames’ lineup for six weeks because of a sprained right knee.... Pittsburgh forward Alexei Kovalev had arthroscopic knee surgery and is out indefinitely.... Chicago assistant Denis Savard, charged in August with drunken driving, pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge of reckless driving and was fined $2,500.
