Fire Causes $800,000 Damage to Home Built in 1887
Los Angeles firefighters saved a historically significant Victorian home Friday night, but the blaze still caused about $800,000 in damage, authorities said.
The damage included destruction of period furniture and other antiques, said Battalion Chief Carl Butler of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The home is known as El Mio and was built in 1887. It was declared a historical monument in 1975.
Former Deputy Mayor Mike Gage once owned the property on East El Mio Drive, said Charlie Fisher, a member of the neighborhood historical society.
Fire officials were investigating whether construction on the roof might have sparked the fire, Butler said.
The fire severely damaged the roof and the attic, and smoke and water damaged the second and ground floors, he said. Firefighters were able to cover and save many pieces of furniture and other valuables, Butler said.
The fire was reported about 5:10 p.m. and took about an hour to put out, Butler said.
