Second Wind Good for Third Victory

Share

With one pitch in the first inning Saturday, Seattle pitcher Jamie Moyer gave up as many runs as he did in 12 innings of the division series. Bernie Williams clobbered a full-count Moyer pitch, sending it over the 399-foot sign in left-center field for a two-run home run and a 2-0 Yankee lead.

Moyer threw hitless ball for the next four innings en route to a seven-inning, four-hit performance that helped the Mariners to a 14-3 Game 3 victory and gave the left-hander his third victory in three playoff starts.

“I felt like once I got to the fourth inning, I got a second wind,” Moyer said. “Why that is, I have no idea. I just tried to focus on making good pitches.”

He made plenty, striking out leadoff batter Chuck Knoblauch twice, one on a 72-mph changeup in the first inning and one on a 73-mph curve in the third. He struck out Scott Brosius twice, one on a 75-mph curve in the fifth.
