The Los Angeles Public Works Board on Monday approved a $24.7-million contract for a Sun Valley sanitation center to serve the east San Fernando Valley.

The 14-acre complex at 11050 Pendleton St. will replace an aging city Sanitation Bureau yard that was severely damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The contract was awarded to S.J. Amoroso Construction Co. of Costa Mesa.

The center will include 110,490 square feet of buildings and a drop-off site where residents can safely dispose of oil, paint and other hazardous household waste.

Bonds repaid by sanitation customers will fund the construction.
