The manifestations and consequences of evil are the subject of the eighth annual City of the Angels Film Festival. The four-day event brings together filmmakers, theologians and moviegoers to view and discuss a diverse slate of films ranging from Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1932 “Vampyr” to Allen and Albert Hughes’ 1993 “Menace II Society,” plus documentaries including “Roger & Me” and “Triumph of the Will” that address the theme of “Touches of Evil.” Horror veteran Wes Craven leads things off tonight with screenings of his films “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.” In between, Craven will discuss the spiritual influences that have driven his films.

The final three evenings of “Philip on Film: A Celebration of 25 Years of Film Music by Philip Glass” offer a rare opportunity to hear the composer conduct his ensemble while seeing the films that he scored. (See review by Mark Swed, Page 55.) Tonight features the original music Glass created for the 1998 re-release of Tod Browning’s 1931 horror classic “Dracula,” starring Bela Lugosi. Friday’s program may be the series’ most interesting, with a near operatic interpretation by Glass of Jean Cocteau’s “La Belle et la Bte.” The film’s original dialogue track and score have been removed and replaced by Glass’ own score, with live singers synchronized with the actors on screen singing the dialogue. The closing film is “Koyaanisqatsi” (from the Hopi language for “life out of balance”), a nonverbal film by Godfrey Reggio.
