Southern California has had only one pirate raid in its history--and Saturday at Mission San Juan Capistrano, history comes to life. At the climax of the annual Pirates Festival, actors in costume will reenact the Dec. 14, 1818, raid on the mission by Argentine pirate Hippolyte Bouchard and his band of privateers. Before the stunt show, this family event features food, music, entertainment and prizes for the visitors with the best pirate, Spaniard or Native American costumes.

It’s not a funeral procession taking place at the Orange County Market Place and Automotive Road of Dreams museum. Rather, it’s the second annual Halloween Hearse, Bug and Monster Show. Members of the Phantom Coaches Hearse Club will show off their hearses and funeral car owners will gather for a “spooktacular” car show and procession through town. On Sunday, the market place opens at 10 a.m. and will feature a Trick or Treat Festival and pumpkin-carving exhibition with celebrity pumpkin sculptor and carver, Farmer Mike, as host. He will be joined by Roger Owens, aka the Peanut Man of Dodger Stadium, who will toss out peanut bag treats to all ghosts and goblins.

For those more faint of heart, the Children’s Museum at La Habra offers an “Un-Haunted” Monster Castle for children ages 2 to 8. Trick-or-treaters can enter a moderately “spooky” haunted house filled with nice monsters, castles, moats and other Halloween fun.
