Not All Action Is at Belmont

No other football games are played during the Super Bowl. No other baseball games are played during the World Series.

So why are other races being run while the Breeders’ Cup, racing’s premier event, is being contested?

Once again, Bay Meadows will run opposite the Breeders’ Cup. Its 10-race card, which features an assortment of claimers and starter allowance contests, will begin at 11 a.m., shortly after the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies is run.

Santa Anita will have one live race at 9:45 a.m. before shutting down until after the Breeders’ Cup Classic is official. The Arcadia track will pick up afterward with six live races, meaning players who stay until the bitter end could spend at least 81/2 hours at the track.

The first Belmont Park race, the Stuyvesant Handicap, will be run at 9:05 a.m. and the post for the seventh and final at Santa Anita is 5:35 p.m.

Trainer Bob Baffert, who will be busy at Belmont Park with the likes of Habibti and Officer, will also have entrants in four of the seven races at Santa Anita.

In the third, Fort Lauderdale, a $390,000 2-year-old purchase, will make her first start since finishing third as the 9-10 favorite in the 2000 Del Mar Debutante against seven other fillies and mares.

A race later, the trainer will be represented by another comebacker, Brainy. A 3-year-old Deputy Minister colt, he hasn’t started in nearly a year. In the fifth, Ex Federali will try for his third win in nine starts in his turf debut and Pie N Burger is the 8-5 morning-line choice in the sixth, which drew only five runners.

Race of the day: The best betting race locally is the fifth, a turf race of about 61/2 furlongs for allowance runners. Contenders include Tate Venture--a troubled third in his most recent outing for trainer Darrell Vienna--Pacing The Cage, Devil’s Roar, the aforementioned Ex Federali and Valiant Vision.

Who’s hot: Foxy Sneakers. The 4-year-old gelding will try for his third straight win as he ships to Bay Meadows for new trainer Gennadi Dorochenko. The Washington-bred, who is 10 for 35 lifetime, is running in the second, a one-mile allowance.

Who’s not: Carry Isle. The Capote filly, who won her debut on June 4, 2000, has lost 10 in a row since. She’s 12-1 on the morning line in the third race.

Exotically speaking: Exacta boxes in the fifth keying Tate Venture with Devil’s Roar, Pacing The Cage and Valiant Vision.

Winners: Previous Day/Meet Total: 3/66. Money: Previous Day/Meet Total: $15.80/$381. Total money bet: $410.
