From Times Staff Reports

An Oxnard squid-processing cannery was fined $27,500 last week after admitting to 10 state Fish and Game Department violations, including purchasing squid without a license.

Ventura County Court Commissioner Ruben De La Torre also placed Oxnard Fish Cannery on three years’ probation and ordered the company and its president, John Borman, to pay $4,399 in back taxes.

The company and Borman pleaded guilty Thursday to eight counts of purchasing fish for commercial purposes without a license and two counts of failure to record fish received.

Ten additional charges were dropped by the Ventura County district attorney, including failure to pay landing taxes and unlawful purchase of squid, Deputy Dist. Atty. Laurel McWaters said.

The alleged violations occurred between November 2000 and March 2001, McWaters said, and were uncovered by Fish and Game officers.
