PLANT CITY, Fla. — A 6-year-old boy suffered a bruise and his classmates escaped injury Tuesday when a .22-caliber handgun the boy had in his pocket went off.
Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies were called to Robinson Elementary School east of Tampa shortly after the 9:30 a.m. shot. Classes were not interrupted, but about 50 parents removed their children from the school as word of the incident spread.
The boy, among 10 pupils in a special class for mentally disabled children, never removed the revolver from his pocket, said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Rod Reder.
After initial uncertainty, it was determined that a real bullet, not a blank, had been fired, Reder said. Detectives were trying to establish how the boy got the gun.
The boy will be suspended for at least 10 days, Hillsborough County School’s spokesman Mark Hart said.
