Daryl Jones, the top receiver for No. 1 Miami, will miss Saturday’s game against Rutgers with a sprained knee ligament but should be ready the next week.

Jones hurt his right knee in the Hurricanes’ 33-7 victory against Penn State on Saturday during a punt return near the end of the first half. He wore a cast Tuesday but will not require surgery, Coach Larry Coker said.

Coker said sophomore Kevin Beard will get his first start Saturday when Miami plays host to the Scarlet Knights.

Oregon State punt returner Terrell Roberts had surgery on his broken left hand, and Coach Dennis Erickson criticized the hit that caused the injury.

Roberts was waiting for a punt during the second quarter of Sunday’s 44-24 loss at Fresno State when he was hit by the Bulldogs’ Kendall Edwards. Edwards’ helmet hit Roberts’ hand, and Edwards was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“It’s open season on punt returners,” Erickson said. You tell me [Edwards] didn’t know he was in the zone when he hit him? No, he did, he knew it. I think what he did was wrong.”

Penn State quarterback Matt Senneca is expected to return for next week’s game against Virginia after an arm injury sidelined him for most of the season opener against Miami.

But starting linebacker Derek Wake will miss the rest of the season because of a torn ligament in his left knee.
