Staff and Wire Reports

The Mighty Ducks gave up three power-play goals in a 4-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes Monday night in an NHL exhibition opener.

Daniel Briere had a goal and an assist for host Phoenix, which had 14 power-play opportunities.

Anaheim rested left wing Paul Kariya, and Steve Shields made 20 saves over the first two periods before being replaced by Ilja Bryzgalov. Petr Tenkrat gave the Mighty Ducks a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 6:03 into the game.

Kariya also will not play in tonight’s exhibition game against the Kings at Staples Center.

Coach Bryan Murray said Kariya would play Wednesday, when the Ducks face the Minnesota Wild at the Pond. Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who has been slowed by a groin injury during camp, will start in goal tonight.

The Ducks’ exhibition schedule--seven games in 10 days, starting with Monday’s loss--probably will delay cuts until Sept. 23, when Cincinnati, their minor league affiliate, needs to begin its training camp. The Ducks, though, probably will return some junior players to their teams this week.
