From Times Staff Reports
A magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit an area of the Pacific Ocean 50 miles off California’s Humboldt County coast at 1:02 a.m. Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake, centered 63 miles southwest of Eureka, occurred in the “triple junction” region of frequent seismic activity where two tectonic plates come together with the northern reach of the San Andreas fault.
The quake was only weakly felt on land, and did no damage.
