Trial of Last Defendant in Zara Slaying Begins
Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial of a Ventura gang member accused of participating in the September 1999 beating death of 18-year-old William Zara.
Ramiro Salgado, 22, is the last of five defendants to stand trial in the death of Zara, who was bludgeoned outside his apartment by gang members who mistakenly thought he had reported their noisy party to police.
The four other defendants, who were charged months before police uncovered evidence of Salgado’s alleged involvement, were convicted of murder last year.
They are serving life prison sentences.
