8pm Pop Music

“Souljacker,” the new album from L.A.’s Eels, is quickly drawing the best reviews of the group’s illustrious--if commercially underachieving--career. And it’s not just the hometown daily paper that has called it the best album so far this year. Time magazine recently reached the same conclusion.

Eels, El Rey Theatre, 5515 Wilshire Blvd., L.A., 8 p.m. $20. (323) 936-4790.

5pm Dance

Honoring the excellence of artists, teachers, technicians and others in the Southern California dance community, the annual Lester Horton Dance Awards are named for the modern dance pioneer who worked on local stages (including movie sound stages) and launched the careers of such icons as Alvin Ailey and Bella Lewitzky. Presented by the Dance Resource Center of Greater Los Angeles (a service organization), the Hortons have recently become a glittering black-tie event, though that designation is officially “open to cultural interpretation” in light of the many, many definitions of formal attire in our multicultural community. In other words, your best sarong or sari is just as welcome as a Vera Wang.

11th Annual Lester Horton Dance Awards, Japan America Theatre, 244 S. San Pedro St., downtown L.A., 5 p.m. $25 (Dance Resource Center members) to $50. (818) 769-3093.
