Minority Admissions Surpass UC Expectations

Share

The data on minority admissions at the University of California are interesting indeed (“Minority Levels Rebound at UC,” April 5). For those of us who supported the dismantling of affirmative action and endured taunts from the left that our motives were racist, these statistics prove three things.

* Minority students are just as capable and motivated as white students. To support affirmative action essentially tells minorities that we believe they are incapable of competing. Now who are the racists in this picture?

* If the dismantling of affirmative action was a right-wing, racist plot, it failed. The proportion of new students who were white dropped from 42.8% in 1997 to 39.8% in 2002. Please note that both figures are below the proportion of whites in the California population.
