From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Responding to parent complaints, the Conejo Valley Unified School District is cutting down on homework.

The school board tentatively approved a new policy this week in response to parent complaints that students were getting too many assignments every night and had little time for sports, church or family. The board will vote for final approval May 14.

The new policy sets time limits for homework: students in kindergarten through second grade, up to 20 minutes; third through fifth grades, 30 to 50 minutes; middle school students, 60 to 90 minutes; and high school students, 90 to 120 minutes.

The new policy also states that homework must be directly tied to standards--what the state expects students to learn.
