Cerritos Arts Center Releases Schedule for 2002-03 Season

Singer Diana Ross, the Chieftains, Miami City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra highlight the 2002-03 season at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Ross will open the new season with performances Aug. 9 and 10. The Chieftains will play Jan. 25.

Miami City Ballet will dance two different mixed-bill programs on May 2 and 3, 2003. The Philadelphia Orchestra, led by Wolfgang Sawallisch, will play Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 on May 17. Sawallisch will be in his last season as music director of the orchestra.

Other pop artists this year will include Jose Feliciano (Aug. 16), Peter, Paul and Mary (Sept. 20-21), Harry Belafonte (Oct. 8-9), David Cassidy (Nov. 2) and Audra McDonald (Nov. 23). Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme will appear in a farewell tour (Feb. 22-23, 2003).

Visiting dance companies will also include L.A.-based Diavolo Dance Theater (Aug. 30-31), the Swiss mime troupe Mummenschanz (March 8-9), and the Russian Perm State Ballet (April 4-6).

Other classical artists will include tenor Jose Carreras (Oct. 29) and Van Cliburn International Competition gold medalist Olga Kern (Nov. 12).The Acting Company will stage Shakespeare’s “As You Like it” on April 11, and the West Coast premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winner Studs Terkel’s “American Dreams Lost and Found” on April 12.
