A McCarron Six-Pack?

Share

Seeking his sixth consecutive win in the Los Angeles Handicap in 1974, jockey Don Pierce had to settle for third with Soft Victory, a 6-year-old he had ridden to victory in the six-furlong race the previous year.

In today’s $100,000 Hawthorne Handicap at Hollywood Park, Chris McCarron will try to go one better than Pierce.

A member of racing’s hall of fame since 1989, McCarron has won the Hawthorne, a Grade III run at 11/16 miles on the main track, five times in a row and has an excellent chance to make it six.

Looking to extend a streak that began with Twice The Vice in 1997 and continued with I Ain’t Bluffing, Victory Stripes, Riboletta and Printemps, McCarron will be aboard Ask Me No Secrets late this afternoon.

A 4-year-old daughter of Seattle Slew owned and bred by Earl Shultz and trained by Dave Hofmans, Ask Me No Secrets will be looking for her fourth win in six starts and her second graded stakes victory in six weeks.

Sent on the road for the first time last month, Ask Me No Secrets easily captured the Oaklawn Park Breeders’ Cup in Arkansas, winning by 41/2 lengths after leading from start to finish.

Second in her only other race at Hollywood Park, she figures to get her main opposition from Alexine, winner of last month’s Santa Lucia at Santa Anita, and Verruma.

Race of the day: The $250,000 San Francisco Breeders’ Cup Mile at Bay Meadows drew only four entrants, but all--Decarchy, The Tin Man, Sarafan and Suances--have a shot.

Who’s hot: Victor Espinoza. The jockey won four races in the first two days of the meet, including three on Thursday with Arabic Song, Fin Entertainment and Aly’s Fever.
